about

Foreword by David Bridie

You are most likely to find the unassuming George Telek chewing betel nut, sitting on an up turned canoe, or in the back of a PMV, baseball style cap on, travelling between Rabaul town and Kokopo in Papua New Guinea - a small dash of lime marked around his eyelids in true Tolais style. He is the humblest rock star I have ever met. He is close to retirement now, jokingly referring to himself as "lapun pinis" (old man finished) but he's not done yet! George is proudly putting out his compilation CD this year and doing a round of touring to play once more for his loyal fans both in PNG and internationally. Sir George is quite the legend of PNG and Melanesian music.

Telek has become the elder statesman of PNG. He has sung for freedom for his brothers and sisters in West Papua, he has sung for the need of environmental care in his home country of Papua New Guinea, he has sung love songs, spirit songs, ancestral songs, and tales of grassroots village life.

His career has spanned nearly forty years. From his time back in the 70s and early 80s with The Kagan Devils, Molach, The Unbelievers stringband and then on to the massively successful rock outfit Painim Wok band, the wonderful Moab Stringband through to a very successful solo career that has seen him releasing albums and performing concerts all around the world.

Telek is PNG's foremost ambassador on the international stage by anyone's imagination. He has painted a "Narapela kain piska long PNG", a different picture of PNG from the usual media depictions of corruption and rakol crime. Telk's songs depict the beauty of Tolais culture and place, uniquely centred around the picturesque volcano town of Rabaul whether it be in traditional styles, stringband music or unique pop sensibility. He has travelled the world, gracing the stage throughout the Pacific, the USA, Europe, the UK and Australia.

George and I come from very different places. He has shown me a glorious world and taught me things I could never imagine. I am proud of the adventures we have shared.

This is a wonderful compilation. A celebration of one of our region's greats. Ladies and Gentlemen, Mannameri, tutana na wawena, I present to you for your musical enjoyment... Sir George Telek (lapunpinis).
