about

Leserpla villagem, Ureparapara

This song is about Rowa (Reef Islands) and the cyclone in 1939 that led to everyone resettling in Leserpla, Ureparapara. Rowa is reported to be the birthplace of Vanuatu shell money. In early 1939, the sound of a cyclone came from the northern end of the island and the sea rose to very high levels, flooding homes and garden areas and sweeping them into the ocean. The seawater kept rising and the sound of the wind was so strong that the people had to move to higher ground. While they sat and thought about what was going to happen, a big wave came and swept throughout the whole island so they had to move to Leserpla, Ureparapara. They sing about how they are leaving behind their island the birthplace of their shell money.
