Leserpla village, Ureparapara

A cyclone swept over Rowa Island in 1939. The big seas destroyed the best fishing places. Instead of fish, all they could catch after the cyclone were eels. From then on when they’d fish anywhere in that vicinity the eels would appear and scare them and the young men wanted to kill them but the elders said “You cannot kill them for they are your ancestors.” After the cyclone people of Rowa moved to the village of Leserpla on the bigger island of Ureparapara which was on much higher ground.
