about

Location: Zimbabwe / Australia
From the album 'Nganyerre'

'Nganyerre is a Dhudhuroa word meaning 'Dance' and the song about celebration through dance.

An album rich in African percussive textures combined with strings and vocals to create a tense yet playful collection of songs about celebration, greener pastures, pilgrimage, resilience and reverence. The project is Tawanda Gadzikwa’s five year labour of love exploring musical possibilities through effortless and sincere collaborations with artists from Zimbabwe, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Ethiopia, Brazil, Australia and England. The album was recorded in locations ranging from outdoor sites of spiritual significance in Zimbabwe to professional recording studios in Australia and performed in languages ranging from Sanskrit (Pilgrims) to Lingala (Tingama).

Tawanda carried out field recordings in Zimbabwe during visits to family and friends. He spontaneously recorded social, cultural and spiritual events as a means of capturing the vibrancy of music in daily life in Zimbabwe. The string performances are by the Letter String Quartet and arranged by Biddy Connor who patiently got to know the songs and their meaning.

The group is an assemblage of various artists under the single name JABULA! which means rejoice in Zulu, a South African language. The album’s title track Nganyerre, written and performed by Jida Gulpilil, is about celebration through dance and is performed in the Dhudhuroa language of Jida’s North East Victorian Aboriginal heritage.
