First Nations Australia & Bougainville unite through music: Get Up, Stand Up, Show Up!
A creative collaboration between six young musicians from Bougainville and two highly regarded First Nations performers from Australia has led to the release of a track which encourages people to stand up for their communities.
Wan Solwara (One Ocean) features Adrian Tjupurrula (Tjupurru) Fabila and his son Jake, who created the song with Michael Dave, Ruth Maison, Walter Kerevio, Jolista Masu, Robertha Yansi and Milton Garea during a visit to Bougainville in September 2022.
The track incorporates a range of traditional and contemporary instruments including bamboo pipes, with Tjupurru on didjeribone (a cross between a didjeridu and a trombone) and rapping from Jake. Other contributors include bass guitarist Richard Mogu, who wrote the lyrics, Tsarlayse Iamu and Kawas Band.
Tjupurru and Jake are Djabera Djabera people of the West Australian Kimberly. Tjupurru was born in Port Moresby and has family connections to Central Province and Bougainville, so he was determined that Jake should be part of the exchange and “carry the spear forward”.

lyrics

Wan Solwara

Yumi kam bung wantaim, soim kalsa bilong tumbuna
Let’s dance to our tribal songs of our fathers

Yumi kam bung wantaim, soim kalsa bilong tumbuna
Let’s dance to our tribal songs of our mothers

From mountains to the sea,
let’s sing in unity
North, Central na South, chanting in one voice

From mountains to the sea,
let’s sing in unity
North, Central na South, chanting in one voice

Chorus:
Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up!
People of Bougainville
Paitim, winim na meknais
Long bambu bilong yumi  x 2

Kirap! Sanap! Soim! Yumi was solwara
Paitim, winim na meknais
Long bambu bilong yumi  x 2

We live, we listen,
This life is built with friction,
Kinetic energy,
Prepping a legacy,
Let it be,
part of my mission,

But I, Feel like we need the connection,
Data, west to the eastern sections,
to the north,
Seeking a reverence,
To the south,
Surviving the elements,
Get up, Stand up,
Showing this world we band up,
Bringing the integration of a,
Tumbuna Bridge,
Closing the land gap,

We are the seasonal change,
Leading the next generation,

Umi wan,
Sol wara,
Shout it out,
for the nation…

Chorus:

Get Up! Stand Up! Show Up! People of Bougainville
Paitim, winim na meknais
Long bambu bilong yumi  x 2

Kirap! Sanap! Soim! Yumi was solwara
Paitim, winim na meknais
Long bambu bilong yumi  x 2
